CAROLE FREEMAN

48 PORTRAITS (2016)

48 Portraits references Gerhard Richter’s 48 Portraits of white European men of historic and cultural interest painted for the German pavilion of the 1972 Venice Biennale, and Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein’s reply 20 years later with 48 women. For her solo exhibition Something About Winnipeg, Freeman expanded the dialogue to equal numbers of female and male figures, all Winnipeg connected, some known, some less known, some of indigenous heritage, in an attempt to level the playing field, and address issues of rights, equality, and value of place.
