48 Portraits references Gerhard Richter’s 48 Portraits of white European men of historic and cultural interest painted for the German pavilion of the 1972 Venice Biennale and Austrian artist Gottfried Helnwein’s reply 20 years later with 48 women. In her solo exhibition Something About Winnipeg, Freeman countered that dialogue with equal numbers of female and male figures, all Winnipeg connected, some of indigenous heritage, some known and some less known, to address issues of rights, equality, and value of people and place.
